About Me

Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) researcher investigating how technologies can be designed to support social connectedness in later life, with a focus on community-based contexts and participatory action research.

Welcome to my academic website! I am Yushan Xing, a final-year PhD candidate in the School of Computing and Information Systems at the University of Melbourne, working within the HCI research group. My research examines how technologies can be designed and deployed to support social connectedness in later life, with a particular focus on community-based settings. I am passionate about conducting qualitative research that informs the design of inclusive and accessible technologies that meaningfully respond to the needs of older adults and other stakeholders within community contexts.

My work draws on participatory and action-oriented approaches, including interviews, fieldwork, co-design workshops, and collaborative prototyping, to gain in-depth insights into participants’ lived experiences and everyday contexts. As part of my PhD, I conducted a two-year participatory action research project in collaboration with a local community centre, exploring how inclusive technologies can be co-designed to enrich older adults’ social interactions during community program sessions. My research has been published in leading conferences and journals in HCI and ageing, including The ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI) and Journal of Medical Internet Research – Aging (JMIR Aging).

I warmly invite you to explore my work and get in touch if you share similar research interests.
